(180) Level of significance, or Significance level
The probability, in a statistical test, that the observed result might have occurred by chance. If the occurrence by chance is reduced to about 1 out of 100, this is referred to as the `0.01 or 1 per cent level of significance`. More generally, any difference that chance would cause to be exceeded with a probability of P is said to lie on the P `level of significance`.
